Hollyoak's Trailer notes
These are notes I made on a 30second Hollyoaks trailer.
Hollyoaks trailer notes
Title card- aqua background, purple and white name- feminine colours, also young, font is female
male and female sexuality symbols showing what hollyoaks is about
Sponsored by Nikon- boys technology
18ish girl in risqué club, light coming from left and right- making interesting shadows
starts with reaction shot, expression shows something has gone wrong
Black gloved hand opening door at low angle, pan up. Pauses at door- not suppose to be there
older than rest of cast- doesn’t fit with theme; audience knows he is odd one out
Student halls, standing in front of window, light from another window seen- remade shapes
Half face in shadow, two points of light, glasses and grey hair show same older guy from earlier
story lines linked- they anchor each other
can tell from the way younger one is turning to face other character that they know each other
pull focus
Outside- nature daylight
peaks and troughs of trailer- excitement, suspicion, “soft + cuddly” constantly changing mood and tone
Point of view of audience sat at table next to male character, feels like you are in the scene
high angle shots,
‘ka-ching’ odd sense of style- stereotyping gay character
pan across scene, focus in as another character walks past
sense of uniform
Big close up – at eye level- top of head cut off, see facial expression and eyes clearly
light creates angles and suspicion
Over the shoulder shot- reverse angle shot, almost in big close up, standing extremely closely- intense emotion
Last title card- channel, brand, twitter feed (hash tag), day, time, everyone knows the channel 4 symbol.
grey and white- slightly more masculine.

Soap opera practice
This was my preliminary task, which relates to evaluation question 4.
By creating a practice soap trailer by remaking scenes from channel 4's Hollyoaks I could see the different shot types mostly used in Soap opera's. It also allowed my group to get use to working with the camera's and editing technologies and well as working with each other. During the making of this each member of my group got to have a go at being the director actor and working with the cameras.

Soap opera basics
• Originated 1920’s USA
• Broadcast on the radio
• Made originally to advertise soap powder to American housewives
• Soap is a feminine genre- the genre is primarily aimed at women
• This affects scheduling- because traditional female roles are based in the home soaps are aired after mealtimes when there is a lull in the day
• Target audience also affects story lines, narrative perspective, characterisation, settings, and costume.
• Soap operas run continuously, in the same time slot, on the same days, broadcast by the same institutions, for years. Because they are repeated so often, they become part of the cultural psyche. They become part of who “we” are.
• The characters become “people”
• Storylines are relatable- audiences can watch and understand what is happening, and empathise with characters. Or hate them.
• Some storylines can be outrageous- e.g. baby-swapping in Eastenders.
• Most soaps have between 10-15 main characters, with overlapping, interweaving storylines
• Storylines overlap to keep audiences interesting. Different strands can run alongside each other but develop at different times
• Catharsis: emotional cleansing. The purging of negative emotions by watching another person go through something similar/worse.
• Soap becomes therapy when it is cathartic – people deal with their problems vicariously
• Soap operas become a form of escapism for certain audiences
